What Is a Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL)?

A Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL) issued by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) allows you to legally fly an aircraft for compensation. It is the gateway to an airline career in India.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Age: Minimum 17 years to start training; 18 years for licence issuance
  • Education: 10+2 with Physics and Mathematics
  • Medical: Valid DGCA Class 2 Medical (CA-35) for training; Class 1 for licence

Step-by-Step Roadmap to CPL

Step 1 ÔÇö Choose a DGCA-Approved Training Institute

Step 2 ÔÇö Clear All 4 DGCA Written Exams

  • Air Regulations
  • Aircraft & Engine ÔÇö Technical General & Specific

These online exams require thorough preparation. Most theory courses run 3ÔÇô4 months full-time.

Step 3 ÔÇö Obtain Your RTR(A) / FRTOL Licence

The Flight Radio Telephone Operator Licence (FRTOL) issued by the WPC (Ministry of Communications) is mandatory for all pilots and covers radio communication procedures and theory.

Step 4 ÔÇö Complete 200 Flight Hours at an FTO

You must log a minimum of 200 hours at a DGCA-approved Flying Training Organisation, including:

  • 185 hours on Single Engine Land aircraft
  • 15 hours on Multi Engine Land aircraft
  • Solo cross-country, instrument, and night flying

Step 5 ÔÇö DGCA Skill Test (Final Flight Test)

After completing your hours, you appear for the DGCA Skill Test with an authorised examiner ÔÇö the final practical assessment before your CPL is issued.

Salary After CPL

  • First Officer (Junior): Ôé╣1.5 ÔÇô Ôé╣3 Lakhs/month
  • Senior First Officer: Ôé╣3 ÔÇô Ôé╣5 Lakhs/month
  • Captain: Ôé╣5 ÔÇô Ôé╣10 Lakhs/month
